Gladys Marie (Griffin) Stewart

Gladys Marie Stewart, age 99, departed her life in peace on Friday, February 13, 2026, at home. She was the daughter of the late Anna Carver Griffin and Joe Williams. At an early age, she joined Bethel A.M.E. Zion Church of Elizabeth City, NC, where she developed a deep and abiding love for the Lord and for her church family. She loved attending church and carried a kind spirit wherever she went. Her favorite words were, “God is taking care of me,” and “I love you.” 

Marie was united in Holy Matrimony to the late Alphonzo Stewart. Through this union, they were blessed with eight children. She was preceded in death by her beloved spouse, Alphonzo Stewart; Mary White; Elton “Elt” Williams; Lorenzo “Buddy” Stewart; Lorraine “Took” Spence; and Earl “Cubby” Stewart.

Gladys was known for her gentle heart, generosity, and giving nature. She loved all of her children dearly, though she was known to have a special soft spot for her boys. Gladys found great joy in cooking, and her signature dishes were collard greens and boiled chicken wings, which were favorites among family and friends. Kentucky Fried Chicken was her favorite restaurant, and she always looked forward to enjoying a good meal there.

She also loved shopping, hand sewing, and listening to gospel quartet groups, which brought her great happiness. Whether combing and braiding her hair, enjoying banana popsicles and Tootsie Roll Pops, or spending time with loved ones, she embraced life with grace and gratitude.

Left to continue her legacy are: Kathleen “Kat” Stewart of Chesapeake, VA; Alan Stewart (Patrice) of Elizabeth City, NC; and Esther “Lulu” Anderson (the late Robert) of Elizabeth City, NC; along with a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends who will cherish her memory. Thank you.

Celebration of Life Service will be Wednesday, February 18, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at Bethel AME Zion Church in Elizabeth City, North Carolina with Bishop David White, Eulogist.  Interment will follow in the Memory Gardens Cemetery in Elizabeth City, North Carolina.  A visitation/viewing will be Tuesday, February 17, 2026, from 4-6 p.m. at the funeral home.
